About Us
North Connaught Youth & Community Services Ltd. (NCYCS) is a registered charity, originally
founded in the 1960's as the Sligo Federation of Youth Clubs, later affiliated to the National
Youth Federation. The organisation operates as an independent Regional Youth Service encompassing
North Mayo, Leitrim and Sligo , and is established as a company limited by guarantee.
Through its dedicated staff, management team and volunteers, NCYCS aims to provide support for
the development of young people. This is achieved by providing a comprehensive service based on
the concept that quality youth work is an effective setting for the social education and personal
development of young people.

Existing Services of NCYCS
YOUTH INFORMATION SERVICE
Provides a comprehensive information service for young people & those who work with them in
the region.
OUTREACH YOUTH ADVICE & INFORMATION SERVICES
This service includes workshops, exhibitions, presentations, displays, information evenings/days etc.
for young people in Sligo.
TEEN BETWEEN SUPPORT
A listening, advice & supporting service for young people experiencing difficulties as a result of
their parents separation/divorce.
YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING COURSES
Providing basic youth work skills.
HEALTH PROMOTION PROGRAMMES
Raise awareness around health issues such as HIV & drugs. Targeting Youth & Community groups in the
region.
ISSUE BASED WORKSHOPS
Raising awareness of relevant issues for young people including bullying, suicide, alcohol etc.
FUNDING ADVICE
To provide funding information fro services to youth clubs, community groups in the region, relating to
grant applications.
CERTIFICATE IN YOUTH & COMMUNITY WORK
To increase skills to volunteer youth leaders/workers in partnership with Sligo Institute of Technology.
YOUTH CLUB SUPPORT WORK
Support & training for youth clubs in the region including recruitment of volunteers, induction training,
programme planning etc.
SUMMER CAMPS
To provide holiday activities & breaks for young people in clubs in the region.
INTER-CLUB ACTIVITIES
Promoting networking between young people in youth clubs within the region.
SPECIAL PROJECTS FOR DISADVANTAGED YOUTH
These tackle social isolation & target young people in Leitrim & Ballina.
GARDA YOUTH DIVERSION PROGRAMME
These programmes work with alienated young people & /or young people at risk; Youth Action Ballina (YAB)
& Youth Action Project Sligo (YAPS).
INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGES
Exchange programmes for young people & leaders, broadening the horizons of young people, fostering
self-development & self-worth & increasing understanding between peoples. |

The North Leitrim Youth Project has
being established by North Connaught Youth & Community Services & is funded by the EU
Programme for Peace and Reconciliation.
The primary target group of the project is young people in the 12 - 17 age group in the North
Leitrim region of Kinlough, Glenade, Kiltyclogher, Manorhamilton, Dromahaire & Kilargue.
The project offers 3 main services:
An OUTREACH YOUTH SERVICE which will provide guidance, encouragement & support in the lives
of young people. Including early school leavers, teenage parents or young people identified by
agencies as needing support. This support will extend to the young persons family, school &
community by providing information & workshops, in relation to the emotional, educational &
development needs of the individual through a variety of methods including recreational activities,
personal development, health awareness as well as environmental & social activities. This service
includes the establishment of groups which focus on issues relevant to young people, providing them
with the opportunity to explore subjects & voice their opinions in their peer groups therefore
facilitating the development of confidence & self-esteem.
A YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SERVICE will involve work with communities by offering advice, support &
opportunities for training to volunteers who are currently involved with or are interested in, running
youth organisations in their local area & by providing support, training, information & research
to volunteers & young people within structured frameworks such as youth clubs/groups, special
needs/interest groups, etc. The development officer will also provide support to communities interested
in setting up summer programmes, assist communities in the establishment of youth clubs, support
communities/youth clubs with funding applications, help clubs to meet other clubs affiliated to the
North Connaught Youth Community Services programme, to give clubs the opportunity to participate in
interclub activities such as interclub exchanges/visits at local, cross border & international
levels, sporting events, cultural, drama & creative activities, etc.

A YOUTH INFORMATION SERVICE will provide a free, confidential & comprehensive information service
& will assist individuals, groups & secondary school to organise projects & develop initiatives.
The information officer will also deliver workshops & information in relation to programmes such
as drug awareness, alcoholic abuse, bullying, interview techniques & mock interviews, research on
third level colleges, CAO - CAS applications, & host other issue based workshops as requested by
teachers, schools & clubs. |
